WELCOME IF YOU'RE SERIOUS ABOUT GETTING WELL, YOU CAME TO THE RIGHT PLACE. A message from the Doctor: The world of health care is in turmoil. Downward trends in health-related statistics reflect the direction our health as a nation is taking. The leading causes of death in America are lifestyle related: heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Obesity continues to increase. Experts predict that the youngest generation will have a shorter lifespan than the previous one for the first time in history. All of this is happening in spite of the fact that we spend huge sums in our medical health care system with all of its high-tech diagnostics and interventions. What is behind this decline in our health? Brace yourself for the answer, it may shake up your belief system. OUR CULTURE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HEALTH MEANS! We have been marketed to on the basis of symptom relief so often and for so long that most people think being without symptoms means they are healthy, and having symptoms means they are sick. Symptoms/disease/sickness have become the enemies to be defeated at all costs, even at the expense of health. This is what I call "Sick Thinking." The sick thinking mindset says wait until you have a condition or disease, then treat the symptoms. Live in fear, waiting for the next crisis, and hope something can be done about it. But, think about the medications recently pulled from the market when the dangers of their use were revealed. Realize that all medications are toxic, and all surgeries have risks. Yet these are the tools most often used to deal with symptoms/disease/sickness. Sick thinking is a carefully cultivated paradigm. It makes money for the medical industry, while the health of a nation suffers. The truth is, this "crisis management" approach to health is totally illogical and reading further will explain why. . As a doctor, I take the role of teacher very seriously. You should be empowered with knowledge to make informed decisions about something as important as your health. Choices made based on only one source of information are not truly informed decisions. And no one has more to gain or lose from those decisions than YOU. So, fasten your seatbelt. You are about to discover... THE TRUTH THE "HEALTH" CARE INDUSTRY HOPES YOU NEVER LEARN. To achieve any goal, you have to know where the goal is and how to get there. Too often the terms "health" and "wellness" are stated as goals when the actual outcome of a service is only relief of symptoms. Why is health a different goal than symptom relief? Read on. Health - A state characterized by anatomical, physiological, and psychological integrity, ability to perform personally valued family, work, and community roles; ability to deal with physical, biological, and psychological and social stress; a feeling of well-being and freedom from the risk of disease and untimely death. 2003 Physician's Desk Reference Medical Dictionary If this is what health really is, shouldn't the goal of health care be to help us reach a state of anatomical, physiological, and psychological integrity? In other words, a state of normal function? Is this accomplished by adding toxins to hijack control of body chemistry (drugs)? How about waiting until an organ is diseased and removing it? Not a chance. The only way the body works right is when all the parts are there and working together under proper control by the nerve system. Combining this with an environment created by a lifestyle that helps the body work right makes optimal health a reality. Where do symptoms fit in? Symptoms are your body's way of telling you something is changing. They can be present when your body is not working right, signalling a problem. They can be present when your body is doing the right thing, such as sore muscles following exercise. The most alarming aspect of symptoms is that they may be absent when your health is in deep trouble! We have all heard of or experienced in our family a diagnosis of cancer found unexpectedly. Or the friend that appeared "healthy as a horse" right up until their fatal heart attack. IGNORING WHAT YOUR BODY NEEDS, JUST SUPPRESSING SYMPTOMS AS OUR CULTURE TRAINS US TO DO, IS COSTING YOU YOUR LIFE! "Following an extensive review of the literature, Shuster et al, (2003) define wellness relative to physical, psychological, mental, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual health domains as a higher order construct integrating these domains, and necessarily draws on the level of individual self-perception. Thus we conceptualize wellness as the generalized self-perception of health. From this perspective, wellness is distinct from health-illness; an individual can deem themselves to be in an acceptable state of wellness whether they experience sub-optimal 'health' in any given domain of functioning." Donald Epstein, D.C. Quality of life is more than normal lab test results and the absence of pain. Your body is not an enemy that is out of control. By learning what health really is, your perception that "symptoms are the enemy" can be changed to "malfunction is the enemy." The truth can take you from "sick thinking" to wellness. This empowers you to make informed decisions about your health and stop settling for less than the life you deserve. Health and wellness are specific goals that require a health care service with unique wellness outcomes that help you achieve those goals. A symptom-relief service does not become a wellness service simply by adding "Wellness" to its name. So stop your sick thinking...and get well!
